Pediatric Physical Therapy for Constipation
in Birmingham, AL, & Houston, TX
Constipation is a common concern for young children. But when it becomes ongoing, it can disrupt your child’s comfort, appetite, and daily routines. At PhysioBaby Therapy & Wellness, our pediatric physical therapists help your child move past this discomfort so they can feel more like themselves again. Constipation can be approached more holistically—supporting the body through manual therapy, movement, positioning, and coordination to help reduce the need for laxatives and other medications.
What Causes Constipation in Children?
Constipation is a backup of stool in the colon. It occurs when bowel movements are infrequent, painful, or difficult to pass.
Comfortable bowel movements rely on abdominal pressure to move stool through the intestines, and on a relaxed pelvic floor to allow it to pass. When these muscles don’t work together, stool can remain in the colon.
Several factors can contribute to constipation, including stool withholding, where a child holds it in to avoid pain, reduced core strength that limits effective pushing, and low fluid or fiber intake, which can make bowel movements harder to pass.
In babies, lying flat can make elimination more difficult, and transitioning from liquids to solids can change stool texture.
Signs Your Child May Be Constipated
Your child may benefit from an evaluation with a pediatric physical therapist if they are experiencing the following:
- Passing hard, dry, or “pebble-like” stools
- Straining, crying, or showing distress during bowel movements
- Unwilling to eat or having no appetite
- Tensing up or crossing legs when they feel the urge to go
- Experiencing abdominal bloating or having a firm belly
- Soiling themselves as a result of holding in stool
How Physical Therapy Helps Constipation
At PhysioBaby Therapy & Wellness, physical therapy begins with an evaluation to understand the underlying cause of your child’s constipation. We then create a personalized plan to address the physical “bottlenecks,” which may include:
- Teaching your child to relax the muscles for a more effective, comfortable push
- Using playful activities to support digestive movement
- Incorporating gentle, hands-on techniques to support abdominal movement and muscle coordination
- Teaching breathing and positioning techniques for easier elimination
- Sharing simple strategies to support regular bowel movements at home
For babies, therapy may focus on gentle exercises like “bicycle legs” to support digestion and abdominal massage to help move stool through the body.
