Tethered Oral Tissue (TOTs) Therapy for Tongue-Tie
in Birmingham, AL, & Houston, TX
It’s common for occasional feeding difficulties to occur during your child’s development. But if your child consistently struggles to latch, dribbles milk during feeding, poor weight-gain, inefficient feeding, or has difficulty chewing and swallowing, a tongue-tie may be the cause.
At PhysioBaby Therapy & Wellness, our pediatric occupational and physical therapists use Tethered Oral Tissue (TOTs) Therapy to help children with tongue-ties improve tongue mobility, feeding coordination, breathing posture, and overall comfort during meals.
What Is a Tongue-Tie?
When the thin piece of tissue under the tongue, called the frenulum, is shorter, tighter, or thicker than usual, it can create a tongue-tie that limits how freely your child’s tongue can move. Some tongue-ties are mild and cause no noticeable difficulty, while others make it harder for your child to feed effectively. Early signs of a tongue-tie include:
- Latching troubles during breastfeeding
- Clicking or popping sounds while nursing
- Dribbling milk from the mouth during feeding
- Tiring and long feeding times
- Poor weight gain despite frequent feeding
- Fussing and gassiness during and after meals
- Having difficulty transitioning to and chewing solid foods
How TOTs Therapy Helps with Tongue-Tie
Our occupational and physical therapists at PhysioBaby Therapy & Wellness use TOTs Therapy to help your child’s tongue move more freely and comfortably. Using a gentle combination of hands-on techniques, TOTs Therapy helps reduce tightness in your child’s tongue, jaw, cheeks, and neck so they can feed with greater comfort. As mobility improves, your child may latch, chew, and swallow with more ease, helping meals feel satisfying and rewarding for both you and your child.
For children who require a release procedure, our therapists offer support both before and after treatment. Before release, therapy prepares your child’s body and reduces tightness that may be affecting latch and feeding comfort. After release, therapy supports healing and helps your child learn new tongue movement patterns so feeding and oral motor skills continue to develop with confidence.
