Pediatric Therapy for Torticollis
in Birmingham, AL, & Houston, TX
Does your baby consistently tilt their head to one side during feeding, or does your young child favor looking in the same direction during play and daily routines? It could be a sign of torticollis, a common condition that affects the muscles in your child’s neck and possibly even their body, and makes turning the head in both directions less comfortable.
At PhysioBaby Therapy & Wellness, our pediatric occupational and physical therapists work together to create an individualized treatment plan that encourages comfortable head turning through positioning, more supportive ways to hold your baby during feeding and play-based activities. We also focus on helping your child feel more steady and relaxed during everyday movement and routines.
What Is Torticollis?
Torticollis is a condition where the neck muscles are tighter or shorter on one side, causing your child’s head to tilt or turn more easily in one direction. It may begin before birth due to positioning in the womb, or develop later if your child spends extended time resting in the same position in a carrier, swing, or car seat. Torticollis is typically identified in the first months of life, though the head-turning preference can continue into early childhood if it is not fully resolved.
Signs of torticollis may include:
- Preferring to feed or look to one side
- Tilting the head to the same side most of the time
- Developing a flat spot on one side of the head
- Having difficulty turning the head both ways
- Becoming agitated or resistant when asked to turn the head in the other direction
- Strong preference for one hand or movement on one side of the body
How Pediatric Therapy Helps Children with Torticollis
At PhysioBaby Therapy & Wellness, our pediatric occupational and physical therapists help correct torticollis by addressing the structural imbalances in the neck and body such as muscle tension patterns using manual therapy and then reinforce daily activities affected by it with symmetrical motor patterns. We teach you how to adjust your child’s routines in ways that promote using both sides of the neck. Therapy may include:
- Manual therapy interventions including myofascial release, craniosacral fascial therapy (CFT), gentle range of motion, therapeutic cupping, and more.
- Positioning techniques you can use throughout the day to safely encourage balanced head turning so your child feels more at ease during feeding, play, and rest.
- Stretching and strengthening exercises that gently loosen tight neck muscles and build strength needed for more comfortable movement during daily routines.
- Promoting symmetrical neck use during tummy time and age-appropriate activities with play setups that help your child explore, reach, and look in both directions.
- Adapting your child’s environment, such as reducing time in restrictive seats and arranging spaces to promote active movement and easier engagement with both sides of the neck.
