Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI)
in Birmingham, AL, & Houston, TX

Helping Children Build Strength and Confidence Through Movement

When your child struggles to meet their motor milestones, it can be hard to know what to do next. Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) is a research-based therapy that helps children develop the strength, coordination, and postural control they need to move with greater ease.

Our expert manual therapists at PhysioBaby offer DMI as part of our comprehensive, hands-on approach to pediatric care. Give us a call today to get started.

What Is Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI)?

Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) is a specialized approach that uses repetitive, purposeful movements to help little ones build important motor skills. These movements gently challenge your child’s balance, strength, and coordination while activating the brain and nervous system to support overall development.

DMI can be especially helpful for children with developmental delays or motor challenges. It encourages postural control, stability, and functional movement in a way that’s both structured and tailored to your child’s unique needs. We can incorporate DMI into regular therapy sessions, but our main focus is offering DMI intensives—shorter-term, higher-frequency programs designed to help children achieve new physical abilities in shorter periods of time.

What Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) Can Address

DMI may be helpful for children who experience:

  • Developmental delays
  • Low muscle tone or muscle weakness
  • Balance and coordination difficulties
  • Cerebral palsy or other neurological conditions
  • Genetic disorders affecting movement
  • Delayed gross motor milestones (e.g., sitting, crawling, walking)
  • Difficulty transitioning between positions
  • Trouble with postural control

Many of our therapists also have significant hospital experience working with medically fragile infants, which gives us the skills necessary to support their more complex needs in therapy.

Our Approach to Pediatric Therapy

At PhysioBaby, we believe that you have to address the body’s structure before you can improve its function. Our therapists are trained orthopedic specialists who use hands-on, manual therapy techniques to gently release restrictions, improve alignment, and prepare your child’s body for the motor skills they’re working to achieve.

We also believe that parents should be experts in their child’s body and its function. That’s why we involve you during every step of your child’s treatment, providing guidance, education, and support from day one so you feel confident supporting your child’s growth.

DMI Intensive Therapy at PhysioBaby

In addition to regular therapy sessions, we also offer Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) Intensive Therapy for children who may benefit from a higher-frequency approach. These programs are scheduled 4–5 days per week for 2–3 week intervals, giving kids the chance to practice movements more often and build progress more quickly.

Intensives can be especially powerful for helping children break through plateaus, achieve new motor skills in a shorter timeframe, and carry those gains into everyday life. Each intensive is customized to your child’s unique goals, and our team works closely with you to provide clear support and guidance throughout the process. Families often notice meaningful improvements in strength, coordination, and confidence during and after intensives.

Benefits of Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI)

DMI can provide a wide range of benefits, including:

  • Improved strength and coordination
  • Greater balance and stability
  • Faster achievement of motor milestones
  • Increased independence in mobility
  • Enhanced body awareness and posture
  • Reduced risk of injury from poor alignment
  • Boosted confidence through movement success
